“An AI Self-Portrait, Digital Art”

“A Self-Portrait of DALL-E, Digital Art.” Produced via DALL-E by OpenAI

How does an AI system conceive of itself? That was a question we decided to test out during our Monday morning meeting. If we were to ask DALL-E how it viewed terms such as “self-portraits” of AI and itself, what would it produce?

What we found was rather interesting when we queried AI Self-Portraits with a few tweaks:

  • Self-Portraits with only the term AI all produced images that were human in nature, appeared to produce multiple genders, multiple ethnicities, and had very few “digital” or “robotic” features.

  • When we changed the term from AI to Artificial Intelligence, the images were still equally representing multiple genders, multiple ethnicities, but the images became slightly more digital.

  • The last little test we did was to observe the impact of adding the term “system” to the AI. In these images, while still equally representing multiple genders, multiple ethnicities, the images became much more digital and robotic.

What do you think are some good terms to search to see how DALLE views AI? Send us your thoughts!

Here are some of the images we produced this morning.
